starman

an analysis

starman is the iconic David Bowie song released on the album 'the rise and falls of ziggy stardust' , which was an album that was supposed to convey the life story of Bowie's glittery alter ego, ziggy stardust.

starman starts with a simple strumming pattern, followed by a humming tune before bowie starts to sing. the beginning of the song can already be linked back to glam rock, with the simple guitar opening and catchy melody. the song then continues with the same guitar progression, alongside a bass, drum, aswell as keyboard and strings at one point, and of course, vocals. after the intro and verse one, a chorus plays out, followed by a short guitar solo, verse 2, chorus again, all remaining the same kind of vibe, until the outro, which consists of a lot of la la la's along to the music as it fades out.

the tone colour of starman can be described in a few different aspects.

the main guitar is very brassy and metallic in the beginning, while the

singing in nasal and often rather emotionless. the dynamics change from mf

to f between the verses and choruses, but apart from that there is no particular

distinctive change in dynamics. and the song is played in simple quadruple metre.

the song remains in f major throughout the whole piece and has the

BPM of 96, making it moderato.
